What is a boat fuel level sender?

A boat fuel level sensor, also known as a reed switch fuel level sensor, is a liquid level measurement device based on magnetic principles. It uses a float to activate a reed switch to detect and control the liquid level. It is primarily used for level monitoring in fuel and water tanks, storage tanks, sewage treatment equipment, boilers, and other applications. It is suitable for measuring the levels of fuel, water, oil, and corrosive liquids. Marine oil level sensors are primarily used to measure the liquid levels in fuel and water tanks to prevent excessive oil and water consumption on board, which could prevent the ship from returning to port.


Working principle of boat fuel level sender

This product primarily consists of a float, a reed switch, a guide rod, and a signal output unit.
The guide rod is a metal or plastic rod that secures the float's trajectory. The float contains a magnet and moves with the liquid level.
The reed switch is a magnetic switch housed in a sealed glass tube, closed or opened by a magnetic field.
The signal output unit converts the reed switch's state into a digital signal (such as a 4-20mA or relay output).

As the float rises or falls with the liquid level, the internal magnet approaches the reed switch on the guide rod, triggering its contacts to close (normally open) or open (normally closed). Multiple reed switches can be distributed along the guide rod to implement multi-point level detection (such as high/low level alarms). The reed switch's state change is converted into an electrical signal by an electronic circuit and output to a PLC, controller, or indicator light.

Installation and Debugging of boat Fuel Level Sender

Before installing the fuel level sensor, we must first select a suitable installation location. Avoid areas of turbulent liquid flow to prevent the float from vibrating. The guide rod should be installed vertically to ensure free movement of the float. Remove the included accessories and begin product installation. Typically, flanges or threads are used to secure the sensor to the side or top of the container. After installation, check the seal between the sensor and the tank to prevent leakage, especially from corrosive media. This can help prevent potential safety incidents.

The structure of a marine fuel level sender is typically divided into empty and full level adjustment, and signal testing. When the tank is empty, we must ensure that the float triggers the corresponding reed switch at the lowest level. When the tank is full, we need to verify the accuracy of the highest level. The float can be manually moved to check the output signal.


Maintenance and troubleshooting boat fuel level sender

You should perform routine maintenance on your fuel level sensor, including regularly removing any debris like scale and oil to prevent the float from getting stuck. Additionally, you should regularly check the seal to prevent liquid from entering the guide rod and damaging the circuit.
